What causes gum recession, and how do you know if your gums are receding? Gum recession is a common dental problem that can lead to longer-looking teeth, exposed tooth roots, tooth sensitivity, black triangles between the teeth, food getting trapped, and changes to your smile.
In this video, Dr. John Ku explains how gum recession happens, the most common causes of receding gums, symptoms to watch for, and why gum tissue doesn't grow back on its own.
Gum recession can be caused by several factors, including:
🦷 Bone loss around the teeth
🦷 Your bite or occlusal forces
🦷 Orthodontic treatment or tooth movement
🦷 Loss of supporting bone around the roots
🦷 Other anatomical and dental factors
One of the first signs of receding gums may be that your teeth suddenly look longer. You may also notice sensitive teeth when drinking something cold, brushing your teeth, or even breathing in cold air.
Healthy teeth are surrounded by supporting bone. When bone around part of the tooth root is lost, the gum tissue covering that area may also move downward or recede. This can expose the root surface and create the appearance of a longer tooth.
If gum and bone loss occur between the teeth, you may notice dark spaces known as black triangles. These areas can also trap food and may indicate a more significant loss of supporting tissue.
Once gum tissue has receded, they do not grow back. The appropriate treatment depends on why the recession developed in the first place.
If you are noticing longer teeth, exposed tooth roots, sensitive teeth, black triangles, or worsening gum recession, a dental evaluation can help determine the cause and whether treatment may be recommended.
