How Do Dental Implants Work? The Step-by-Step Process & What to Expect | Washington, DC Dentist

How do dental implants work, and what should you expect during the dental implant process? In this video, Dr. John Ku of W Plus Dental in Washington, DC, explains the steps involved in replacing a missing or non-restorable tooth with a dental implant.

If the damaged tooth still needs to be extracted, we can often remove the tooth and place the dental implant during the same appointment when conditions are appropriate. This can eliminate the need for two separate surgeries. If the missing tooth is noticeable when you smile, we may also provide a temporary tooth for aesthetic purposes while the implant heals.

Why do you have to wait for the final dental implant crown?

After the implant is placed, the gums and jawbone need time to heal. We typically wait approximately three months so the bone can securely integrate around the implant and create a strong foundation for the final restoration.

Once healing is complete, a customized dental crown is screwed directly into the implant. This creates an incredibly stable, secure, and natural-looking replacement tooth that allows you to smile, speak, and eat with confidence.

Dental implants may be an excellent solution for:

• Replacing a missing tooth

• Replacing a tooth that cannot be restored

• Restoring your smile and ability to chew

• Creating a stable, long-term tooth replacement

Every patient’s treatment plan is different. An examination and dental imaging are needed to determine whether immediate implant placement is appropriate.
