What should you eat after dental surgery? Whether you’re recovering from a dental implant, gum graft, tooth extraction, bone graft, or another oral surgery, choosing the right foods can help protect the surgical site and make your recovery more comfortable.
In this video, Dr. John Ku of W Plus Dental in Washington, DC explains what to eat after dental surgery, which foods to avoid, when you can start returning to a normal diet, and how to protect a healing dental implant or gum graft.
For the first few days after dental surgery, focus on soft, cool, and easy-to-chew foods, including:
🥛 Yogurt
🍳 Scrambled eggs
🥔 Mashed potatoes
🍎 Applesauce
🥣 Oatmeal
🥤 Protein shakes
🍓 Smoothies without seeds or chunks
Important: Do NOT use a straw after dental surgery. If you’re having a smoothie or milkshake, use a spoon instead.
After approximately four days, depending on your procedure and your dentist’s instructions, you may gradually introduce more soft foods, including:
• Soft pasta
• Cooked vegetables
• Bananas
• Avocado
• Soft fish
• Shredded chicken
• Ground meat
• Beans
• Soft cheeses
Protecting the surgical area is just as important as choosing foods you can eat. Avoid foods that are:
❌ Hard
❌ Crunchy
❌ Sharp
❌ Sticky
❌ Chewy
❌ Spicy
❌ Acidic
❌ Extremely hot
Examples include chips, popcorn, pretzels, nuts, gummy candy, tough meats, crusty bread, seeds, and small grains that could irritate or become trapped around the surgical site.
Whenever possible, chew on the opposite side of your mouth and avoid chewing directly over your dental implant, gum graft, extraction site, or other surgical area.
As your mouth heals over the next few weeks, you can gradually return to a more normal diet based on your dentist or surgeon’s recommendations.
Remember: start soft, take it slow, and protect the surgical area. A little extra care during the first few days and weeks can help support a smoother dental surgery recovery.
