This gum grafting before-and-after shows treatment of gum recession around a dental implant using a free gingival graft (FGG). Recession and inadequate gum tissue around a dental implant can leave the implant site with thin or insufficient keratinized tissue, which may make the area more difficult to keep clean and can affect the long-term health and stability of the tissues surrounding the implant.
For this case, a free gingival graft was performed using the patient’s own tissue, carefully harvested from the roof of the mouth (palate) and placed at the dental implant site. The goal of FGG gum grafting is to increase the amount of thick, firm, keratinized gum tissue around the implant, strengthen the soft tissue around the restoration, and create a healthier, more maintainable environment around the dental implant.
The before-and-after photos demonstrate the improvement in the gum tissue following FGG gum graft surgery around a dental implant. Free gingival grafting may be recommended for patients experiencing gum recession around dental implants, thin gum tissue, or an inadequate band of keratinized tissue around an implant restoration.
At W Plus Dental in Washington, DC, gum recession and the tissues surrounding dental implants are carefully evaluated to determine the appropriate periodontal treatment for each patient. Treatment recommendations are individualized based on the implant position, amount of recession, gum thickness, tissue quality, and overall health of the implant site.
