Frequently Asked Questions About Gum Health

Why are my gums bleeding when I floss?

Bleeding gums are commonly associated with inflammation along the gumline. Gingivitis and periodontal disease are possible causes, although other factors may also contribute. If bleeding continues, a dental evaluation can help determine the cause.

Can gum recession grow back on its own?

Lost gum tissue generally does not regenerate on its own. Depending on the location and severity of the recession, treatment may focus on preventing further progression or rebuilding the area with a gum graft.

What causes gum recession?

Gum recession can be multifactorial. Possible contributing factors include periodontal disease, genetics, naturally thin gum tissue, orthodontic movement, tobacco use, oral hygiene habits, and forces placed on the teeth.

What is a gum graft?

A gum graft is a periodontal procedure used to rebuild, cover, or strengthen areas where gum tissue is missing or inadequate. Tissue may be obtained from the patient's palate or, in certain cases, from a medically processed donor source.

Can you perform a gum graft around a dental implant?

Yes. Gum grafting may be recommended around an implant when the surrounding tissue is thin, inadequate, or experiencing recession. Treatment depends on the condition of the implant and surrounding tissues.

What happens if gum disease is left untreated?

Periodontal disease can progressively damage the gum tissue and bone that support the teeth. Advanced disease may lead to increasing recession, bone loss, tooth mobility, and eventually tooth loss.

When should I see a dentist about my gums?

Consider scheduling an evaluation if you notice persistent bleeding, swelling, recession, sensitivity, exposed roots, loose teeth, changes around a dental implant, or other changes in your gumline.
